Digitalisation, sustainability and artificial intelligence are driving innovation in the cleaning sector
CMS World Summit 2019 with the keynote theme ’Inject Innovation’ – Purus Innovation Award: awards ceremony on 24 September – New edition of the Mobility Cleaning Circle on 25 September
This week the cleaning world will be turning its attention to Berlin. With the largest number of participants ever at a cleaning trade fair in Germany, CMS Berlin 2019 – Cleaning.Management.Services. will be providing a complete overview of products, systems and processes for the commercial cleaning market. From 24 to 27 September some 450 exhibitors from 25 countries (2017: 429/24) will be occupying more than 31,000 square metres of halls and outdoor display areas (2017: 29,000 sqm) to present their current product ranges.
These include innovative cleaning machinery and equipment, technical refinements to existing products, cleaning and care agents as well as disinfectants. Exhibitors have announced more than 100 products that will either be making their international debut or their first appearance at a trade fair. Digitalisation, sustainability and artificial intelligence will all be widely featured in these new developments. Cleaning robots support the work of building service contractors and digitalisation is used to obtain a complete understanding of business processes, while cleaning products achieve lasting effectiveness and are also biodegradable. For the first time this cleaning trade fair will also provide the setting for the CMS World Summit 2019 (25 – 26 Sept.) with its keynote topic of ’Inject Innovation’. This event is expected to attract more than 20,000 industry representatives from some 80 countries.
Dr. Christian Göke, Chief Executive Officer of Messe Berlin GmbH: “This year’s CMS Berlin will feature a brilliant display of innovations. All these developments are being driven by digitalisation, sustainability and artificial intelligence. CMS Berlin 2019 will demonstrate that automated decision-making processes and self-learning machines have also enabled digitalisation to enter a new dimension in the cleaning industry. Germany’s economic strength as the largest cleaning market in Europe is one of the factors supporting the continuing expansion of CMS Berlin, which is taking place for the tenth time and has once again attracted a record number of participants.”
This year newcomers and startups are among the main features of CMS Berlin 2019. They will be sharing a stand, supported by the Federal Ministry of Economics (BMWi), to present their business ideas. This section of the exhibition is an important component of the Innovation Circle in Hall 6.2. Immediately adjacent to the BMWi stand are national (non-sponsored) and international newcomers with their own innovations. This is also the location of the show featuring all the finalists of this year’s CMS Purus Innovation Award (PIA). The Innovation Circle is also an integral part of an extensive B2B programme aimed at promoting business contacts.
CMS Berlin 2019 is organised by Messe Berlin GmbH. The following professional organisations are sponsors of the event: the German Federal Guild Association of the Cleaning Trade (BIV), Bonn, the Cleaning Systems Trade Association in the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), Frankfurt/Main, and the Hygiene Industry Association (IHO), Frankfurt/Main. In the run-up to this year’s CMS Berlin the leading representatives of the supporting associations issued the following statements:
Thomas Dietrich, National Guild Master of the Building Cleaning Trade: “CMS is rapidly developing into an international innovation lab, and it is also the main platform for presenting trends and forecasts about the future of the cleaning market. To an increasing extent CMS is providing a link between industry, the trade, service providers and startups from Germany, Europe and all over the world. Every day digitalisation is leading to changes. The rate at which data is being transferred between companies, suppliers and customers is increasing all the time. The use of sensors to eliminate unnecessary stages in the work process, and the deployment of automation to replace strenuous physical work, represent major advances in enhanced efficiency and sustainability. Modern training and advanced training in the workplace, life-long learning and training on the job for employees will acquire growing relevance. The bottom line is that virtually all the topics covered at CMS involve digitalisation, which therefore becomes the key element in all discussions about the future.”
Markus Asch, Chairman of the Cleaning Systems Trade Association in the VDMA: “In 2019 CMS provides the most important display of innovations anywhere in the cleaning industry. New digital developments in particular are setting the trends, influencing the entire added value chain for cleaning companies, from employment to procurement, in working processes and in the evaluation of results. In the machinery sector developments are being strongly influenced by digitalisation in parallel with equipment that can operate autonomously. There are other examples of innovative technology too, such as the inclusion in digital processes of machinery that requires a human operator, in order to improve performance and services. CMS is therefore ideal for assessing the progress being made in the cleaning industry.”
Werner Schulze, Chairman of the Building Cleaning Division of the IHO: “The companies in the building cleaning sector which are organised under the aegis of the IHO are bringing a great deal of creativity and enthusiasm to our industry’s most important trade fair. At CMS Berlin 2019 the focus is on the performance capability of the companies, as well as on innovations and the subject of sustainability. We expect the varied and diverse programme to provide many fresh stimuli, networking opportunities and exchanges with existing contacts.”
Highlights of the supporting programme
On 25 and 26 September the focus of the CMS World Summit 2019 will be on the challenges, opportunities and risks facing the global cleaning industry. Under the heading ’Inject Innovation’, the cleaning industry’s decision-makers and creative thinkers from all over the world will be gathering in Berlin. This high-level exchange of information will address the challenges, opportunities and risks involved with digitalisation and sustainability in the cleaning industry, and will consider the dominant themes, such as the circular economy and artificial intelligence. The conference is sponsored by following European industry associations: the European Cleaning and Facility Services Industry (EFCI), the European Engineering Industries Association (EUnited) and the International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products (A.I.S.E.).
The presentation of the CMS Purus Innovation Award (PIA) on 24 September recognises outstanding innovations in the categories Large Machines, Small Machines, Equipment and Digital Tools and Systems. One of the main highlights will be the re-staging of the Mobility Cleaning Circle on 25 September. This exclusive networking event addresses the challenges and suggested solutions for cleaning in the field of mobility. On the first three days of the fair at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the area between Halls 1.2 and 3.2 exhibitors at CMS will be using buses to demonstrate internal and external cleaning methods in public transport.
The CMS Practice Forum in Hall 6.2 will be holding concentrated advanced training events. The programme includes the latest building cleaning topics, the new framework wage agreement, lectures and discussions for representatives of the healthcare, hotel and catering industries and municipal institutions, and topics on industrial safety, hygiene and general health. The Ground Maintenance show (Hall 2.2) will feature practical examples of cleaning machinery and cleaning products, including machinery, equipment and accessories for maintaining green spaces, cleaning highways and paths and carrying out winter services. Outdoors, on the special display areas in front of the main south entrance, exhibitors will be demonstrating cleaning of glass facades and a wide variety of aerial work platforms.
History of cleaning trade fairs in Berlin
Berlin has always had a special relationship with the cleaning industry. This city is regarded as the ‘birthplace of building cleaning’. In 1877 a Frenchman, Marius Moussy from Lyon, became the first person to set up a business here specifically to clean facades and windows. In 1986, after a number of previous events, the trade fair RT Reinigungs-Technik took place, a promising start to the series of international cleaning trade fairs that was to follow in the display halls on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. From 2001 onwards, CMS Berlin – Cleaning.Management.Services., a new event supported by the main industry associations, continued the tradition of cleaning trade fairs in the German capital. This year, the combination of the trade fair CMS Berlin 2019, the CMS World Summit 2019 and once again a record number of participants will represent the biggest achievement to date in the history of Berlin’s cleaning trade fairs.
